Seasonal Roof Care Tips

A roof does not wear evenly through the year. Every season applies a different kind of stress and leaves a different kind of evidence, so working to a calendar means looking for the right things at the right time.
1. Spring: Assess What Winter Did
This is the most valuable inspection of the year. Freeze-thaw cycling opens hairline cracks, ice movement loosens flashing, and snow load stresses the ridge. Walk the perimeter, check the gutters for granules, and look inside the attic for fresh staining.
Book planned work in late summer. Waiting for the first storm means competing with every other homeowner for the same crews.
2. Summer and Autumn: Heat, Then Drainage
Summer punishes materials rather than letting water in, while autumn is entirely about giving water somewhere to go. Four jobs cover both seasons.
- Confirm soffit and ridge vents are clear before peak heat
- Schedule any planned repairs while conditions are dry
- Clean gutters twice, mid-autumn and after the last leaves fall
- Reseal flashing joints before temperatures drop

3. Winter: Watch, Do Not Climb
Observe how snow melts. Bare patches on a snow-covered roof mean heat is escaping through the ceiling, which is the mechanism behind ice dams. The fix is insulation and ventilation, never chipping at the ice. Use a roof rake from the ground and leave the rest to a professional.

Leaks rarely begin where the stain appears. Here is where to actually look.
